Today we are adding on a new verse. In this Scripture Memory Review, we will be learning the verse, and all you need to do is follow along. I will share a word study and practical tips that you can use to memorize the verse. The version Ill be using is the Berean Standard Bible (BSB) but you can use these techniques and apply them to any version you decide to use. So, depending on where you are, either grab your paper, your bible and a pen or just listen and enjoy! Let’s get to it!
Romans 8:4
so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
It’s a good habit to start asking questions as you start to memorize a verse. The best way to do this is by asking the 5W’s and H. If you're listening to the podcast, you can find the questions in the show notes.
Let’s make some observations by asking the 5W’s and H. If you're listening to the podcast, you can find the questions in the show notes.
How is the law described?
What does the righteous standard do?
Who is exempt from this righteous standard?
Who has the righteous standard of the law?
What is the contrast in this verse?
What exactly does the Spirit mean?
Think about this and write down your answers. I'll give you a minute to write those down and as you do, you may need to go back to the previous verses and also review the last Word Studies. You will find a list of the Word Studies on my blog too! You’ll find a separate page at the top of the Blog!
Lets go over the questions. Just an fyi, when you are answering these questions you always want the answers to come from the text.
How is the law described? The righteous standard
What does the righteous standard do? It might be fulfilled in us
Who is exempt from this righteous standard? Those who walk according to the flesh
Who has the righteous standard of the law? Those who walk according to the Spirit.
What is the contrast in this verse? Flesh versus the Spirit
What exactly does the word Spirit mean in this verse?
💡 Word Study: Spirit
I used the Word Studies Series written by Zodhiates and the BLB to look up the word, “Spirit”. It is Pneuma, Strongs number G4151 and for this verse it means spirit or ghost. “new life” and Zodhiates points out that
“it is spoken of that divine influence which the temperament or the disposition of the mind in Christians is affected, i.e correcting, elevating and ennobling, filling the mind with peace and joy. The Spirit in this case stands opposed to the flesh because it does not indulge in the depraved affections and lusts of our physical natures and unrenewed hearts, but follows those holy and elevated actions and desires which the Spirit imparts and cherishes. Through the influence of the Spirit of God, christians have the same disposition and the same frame of mind with Christ. “
Lets look at some Cross References
📚 Cross References
Romans 8:10 “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
Romans 8:16 “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
Hebrews 12:9 “Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live?”
🗣️ Active Memorization Practice
Now we are going to move into the active memorization phase.
Step 1: Listen & Read
Read along silently as I say the verse three times out loud:
so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Step 2: Speak Out Loud
Now it’s your turn! Say the verse out loud 10 times.
(Pause for practice)
Step 3: Recite from Memory
Cover the verse above and repeat it from memory 10 more times.
📝 Today's Reflection
Great job today! Later this afternoon review this verse and practice it daily. As you do, think about what set you free and what are you free from?.
