Scripture Memory Review: Romans 8:1

Today we’re starting the process of internalizing Romans 8 by learning 2 verses a week. In these Scripture Memory Review episodes all you need to do is follow along.  I will share a word study and practical tips that you can use to memorize the verse. The version Ill be using is the Berean Standard Bible (BSB)  but you can use these techniques and apply them to any version you decide to use.  So, depending on where you are, either grab your paper, your bible and a pen or just listen and enjoy! Let’s get to it!

Romans 8:1

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Let’s makes some observations by asking the 5W’s and H

  1. Why does Romans 8 start with “therefore”

  2. Is there a word that indicates a timeframe?

  3. Who is not condemned?

  4. Why are they not condemned?

  5. What does condemnation mean?

Think about this and write down your answers. You can find the questions in the show notes if you are listening.  I'll give you a minute to answer these questions

  1. Why does Romans 8 start with “therefore”

Therefore is such an important word here because it directs the reader to remember what Paul said in chapter 7 where Paul shows us that sin is powerful and that there is an ongoing struggle to do fleshly things.

  1. Is there a word that indicates a timeframe?

Yes, the word “now”

  1. Who is not condemned?

NOW, anyone who is in Christ Jesus

  1. Why are they not condemned?

in Christ Jesus

  1. What does condemnation mean?

Whenever you are starting to memorize a verse it may be a good practice to start asking questions.  As you do this you will be able to understand the verse better.  A lot of times there are words in a verse that I do not understand and this is when a word study would be helpful.  You may not know how to do a word study so I have added a list of my favorite bible study tools on my blog. When you get a chance, check them out!

💡 Word Study: Condemn

The word condemn is Strong’s #2631, and  it means punishment following condemnation, penal servitude, penalty.  It comes as the result of sin.

Understanding this word is especially helpful when we look at Romans 8:1:

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

For those who are in Christ, the verdict has already been rendered. There is no condemnation.

Zodhiates says condemn in this passage means “the result of judgment”.  He elaborates further, explaining that it is:

“The right given to a believer as a result of his or her acknowledgement of the lordship of God in his life.

📚 Cross References

Romans 5:16 Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification.

Romans 5:18So then, just as one trespass brought condemnation for all men, so also one act of righteousness brought justification and life for all men.

🗣️ Active Memorization Practice

Step 1: Listen & Read

Read along silently as I say the verse three times out loud:

  1. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

  2. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

  3. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Step 2: Speak Out Loud

Now it’s your turn! Say the verse out loud 10 times.

(Pause for practice)

Step 3: Recite from Memory

Cover the verse above and repeat it from memory 10 more times.

📝 Today's Reflection

Great job today! Later this afternoon review this verse and practice it daily. As you do, think about what you have because you have made Jesus Christ, Lord of your life.

Till next time, stay rooted!
