Memorize Romans 8:6

Romans 8:6

The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace,

🧱 Building Good Habits

Before we jump into memorizing our verse, I want to take a minute to observe the text.

I’m going to do this in every Scripture Memory Review because I want us to build a good habit of looking at the verse before we start trying to memorize it. So each time, I’ll give you a few questions to think through.

You’ll find these questions in the show notes, and I’ll give you about a minute to think through them. You can write down your answers if you’d like, but you don’t have to.

Here are the questions we’ll be asking:

  1. Do you see a contrast or comparison in the verse?

  2. Are there any words that you need to understand better?

  3. Is there a term of conclusion used?

  4. Are there any repeated words or phrases?

  5. Can you ask the 5 W’s and an H—who, what, when, where, why, and how?

So, observing the text will be a part of our little routine each time we do a Scripture Memory Review before we jump  into memorizing the words.

Okay, let's take about a minute and work through those questions together.

Pause

As I observed this verse, I saw three words that I would want to think through as I memorize this verse.  Death, life and peace.  For me, I wanted to dig a bit more into the word  “peace”. You may want to tackle one of the other words later.

💡 Word Study: Peace

I use multiple resources when doing a word study. For a complete list check out my blog and search for Bible study tools.  For the word “peace” Strong's G1515 says the usage of this word means "The tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot."

Lets look at some Cross References

📚 Cross References

Matthew 10:13 “If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.”

Luke 1:79 “to shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.”

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”

Just reading these verses gives me a sense of peace.

Now that you might have a better grasp on that word, let's start memorizing the verse. As you do, keep in mind those 3 words: death, life and peace. Before we start to memorize, let me give you a practical tip to focus on today as you memorize.

⚡Practical Tips

  • Contrasts and comparisons are very helpful as you memorize scripture. It could help you create a visual image in your mind. As you read this verse see if you can visualize the flesh actually dying and a dove flying in the air that is full of life and peace . Perhaps the left wing would have life and other wing peace.

  • I use a “brain” for Chapter 8 as an image and anything I visually create will have the brain in the picture. So, I have 2 separate pictures for verse 6.  One with a brain and flesh falling off of it and its weight is pulling it down to the ground. The other is a brain that has wings soaring into the sky. On one wing is LIFE and the other wing is PEACE

  • Flesh = Death

  • Spirit = Life and Peace

🗣️ Active Memorization Practice

Step 1: Listen & Read

Read along silently as I say the verse three times out loud:

The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace,

The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace,

The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace,

Step 2: Speak Out Loud

Now it’s your turn! Say the verse out loud 10 times.

(Pause for practice)

Step 3: Recite from Memory

Ok, now cover the verse or look away and see if you can repeat it from memory 10 more times.

📝 Today's Reflection

Great job today! Later this afternoon review this verse and practice it daily. As you do, think about the contrast of the flesh versus the Spirit.  How is your heart?  Are you at peace?  The kind of peace that is given through believing in Jesus Christ as Lord? Oh I hope so friend, and if you are unsure, please reach out to a Pastor or a Christian so they can help you.
