Today we are adding on a new verse. In this Scripture Memory Review, we will be learning the verse, and all you need to do is follow along. I will share a word study and practical tips that you can use to memorize the verse. The version Ill be using is the Berean Standard Bible (BSB) but you can use these techniques and apply them to any version you decide to use. So, depending on where you are, either grab your paper, your bible and a pen or just listen and enjoy! Let’s get to it!
Romans 8:3
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
It’s a good habit to start asking questions as you start to memorize a verse. The best way to do this is by asking the 5W’s and H. If you're listening to the podcast, you can find the questions in the show notes.
What was the law powerless to do?
Why was it powerless?
What did God do?
Why did God do this?
What was condemned?
What does the word flesh indicate?
Think about this and write down your answers. I'll give you a minute to write those down and as you do, you may need to go back to the previous verses and also review the last Word Studies. You will find a list of the Word Studies on my blog too! You’ll find a separate page at the top of the Blog!
What was the law powerless to do? To help us overcome/defeat our sin
Why was it powerless? Because it was weakened in the flesh
What did God do? Sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man
Why did God do this? To be the atoning sacrifice, an offering for sin
What was condemned? Sin in our flesh
What does the word flesh indicate? Let’s see…
💡 Word Study: Flesh
I used the Word Studies Series written by Zodhiates and the BLB to look up the word, “flesh”. It is sarkos Strong number G4561 and it denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God. It implies sinfulness, proneness to sin, the seat of carnal appetites and desires, of sinful passions and affections.
Lets look at some Cross References
📚 Cross References

John 1:13-14“who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

🗣️ Active Memorization Practice
Step 1: Listen & Read
Before we start active memorization, from my experience, I would consider this verse to be sorta like 2 verses because it is so long. So, don’t fret if this verse will take longer for you to memorize.
Alright, read along silently as I say the verse three times out loud:
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
You may have noticed that this verse stops at a comma.
Step 2: Speak Out Loud
Now it’s your turn! Say the verse out loud 10 times. Ill give you about 1min to do this
(Pause for practice)
Step 3: Recite from Memory
Cover the verse above and repeat it from memory 10 more times. You may have to peek and thats ok! This is your first time interacting with this verse
⚡Practical Tips:
Since this is a longer verse, let me encourage you to write it out in phrases. Let me give you an example:
For what the law was powerless to do
in that it was weakened by the flesh,
God did by sending His own Son
in the likeness of sinful man,
as an offering for sin.
He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
