Scripture Memory Review: Romans 8:2

Today we are adding on a new verse.   In this Scripture Memory Review, we will be learning the verse, and all you need to do is follow along. I may also  highlight a word or give you a couple of ways to memorize it that you may find to be helpful. Also, I am using the BSB version but you can use these techniques and apply them to any verse. Have a paper, your bible and a pen and let’s get to it!

Romans 8:2

For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you  free from the law of sin and death.

It’s a good habit to start asking questions as you start to memorize a verse.  The best way to do this is by asking the 5W’s and H.  If you're listening to the podcast, you can find the questions in the show notes.

  1. What is the verb in this sentence?

  2. What are you being set free from?

  3. What sets you free from the law of sin and death?

  4. How does the Law of the Spirit of Life set you free from life and death?

Think about this and write down your answers. I'll give you a minute to write those down.

  1.  What is the verb in this sentence? Set you free

  2. What are you being set free from?  The law of sin and death

  3. What sets you free from the law of sin and death? the law of the Spirit of Life

  4. How does the Law of the Spirit of Life set you free from life and death?  Being in Christ Jesus

What exactly does “set you free” mean?

💡 Word Study: Set you free

I use the Word Studies Series written by Zodhiates and “set you free” is  eleutheroó Strong number G1659 which means to make free, liberate, the result of redemption;  I also looked it up using the BLB and Strongs also says that the biblical usage would be to set at liberty from the dominion of sin. The KJV translation count is 7 times. .  Zodhiates says that this word means “the result of judgment.” and he elaborated further by stating that “it is the right given to a believer as a result of his or her acknowledgement of the lordship of God in his life.”

Lets look at some Cross References

📚 Cross References

John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Romans 6:18 “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.”

An interesting find is that when I looked in the OT to see how this was used, it seems to have God doing the setting. Whatever it is.

Deut 1:21 ESV “See, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’”

1 Samuel 2:8 “He raises the poor from the dust; from the ash heap He lifts the needy to set them among princes, and the throne of glory He bestows on them. For of YHWH are the pillars of the earth, and He has set upon them the world.”

Job 19:8 “He has walled up my way, so that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness upon my paths.”

Alright, now we are ready to start the active memorization phase of this verse.

🗣️ Active Memorization Practice

Step 1: Listen & Read

Read along silently as I say the verse three times out loud:

For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you  free from the law of sin and death. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you  free from the law of sin and death. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you  free from the law of sin and death.

Step 2: Speak Out Loud

Now it’s your turn! Say the verse out loud 10 times.

(Pause for practice)

Step 3: Recite from Memory

Cover the verse above and repeat it from memory 10 more times. You may have to peek and thats ok!  This is your first time interacting with this verse

📝 Today's Reflection

Great job today! Later this afternoon review this verse and practice it daily and also review verse 1 and 2 together.  As you do, think about what set you free and what are you free from? Are you walking as if you are free?

Till next time, stay rooted!
